What’s New in Trelson – Fall 2026

Welcome to a simpler Trelson this fall

When you log in to Trelson, you will be greeted by a new design and several improved features. Trelson has grown significantly over the years, and eventually, the old structure simply was no longer enough. It became difficult to add new features without it feeling cramped and hard to navigate.

That is why we have rebuilt it from the ground up. We have cleaned things up to give you and your students a cleaner and clearer tool, one built to expand with even more functionality over time.

On this page, we have gathered everything you need to know ahead of the start of the term.

This is new in Trelson

Here is a quick overview of the key updates in the app. Click on an update to get more information about the change.

Simplified assignment creation

You now need to enter significantly fewer details when creating a new assignment. Further, you can save assignments as drafts until you know exactly when to schedule them.

Clearer instructions and start screen for students

Instructions for the assignment can now be added under Resources. When there are instructions, a start screen is automatically created for the students, giving them a clear overview of the assignment’s content and resources before they begin.

Preset formatting for the writing area

Under Settings > Formatting, you can now preset the appearance of the writing area for all students, such as 1.5 line spacing, a specific font, or a background color. You can also control exactly which formatting settings the students themselves are allowed to change during the exam.

Easier management of subjects and tags

You can now set subjects and tags directly in the top-right corner of the assignment. If a subject or tag you need is missing, you can create a new one directly inside the assignment.

New assignment type: Spreadsheets and presentations

You can now use Google Sheets/Slides/Docs, or alternatively Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint/Word, as an assignment type in Trelson. Students will receive a copy of, for example, a Google Sheet, which they can work on during the assignment. They lose access to the file when the assignment is closed or submitted. Improved forms and linear grading

Forms are now significantly easier to work with, and scoring is more intuitive. When grading forms, there is now support for linear grading, meaning you can grade one question at a time across all students and easily reuse comments or scores. We highly recommend trying out forms this fall!

Easy preview of the student view

At the top right of every assignment, there is now an eye icon (preview). By clicking it, you can see exactly how the assignment will look for the students. It is also a great tool for displaying instructions on a large screen in the classroom before the assignment starts.

Watch the student’s writing process play back

In the new feedback module, you can play back the student’s entire writing process from start to finish, including deletions, edits, and structural changes. This gives you insight into how the text took shape over time and helps you understand the student’s thought process.

NOTE: Only works for submissions made from August onwards.

Process-based writing support in locked mode

You can now provide feedback using color highlights and comments, send work back for revision in locked mode, and allow students to resubmit as many times as needed before you make your final assessment. Since the work takes place in a locked writing workspace, you have full assurance that it is the student’s own work, without influence from AI or external tools.

New support page featuring relevant help articles

Click the question mark in the top right corner, no matter where you are in the app. Trelson detects which page you are on and instantly suggests the support article related to what you are currently working on.
